The Purpose of the City Church Diaconate

The City Church Deacons address aggravated needs (primarily physical needs) within the City Church community and more broadly in the downtown Gainesville community. Deacons address these needs for the sake of God's glory and the flourishing of the people he has created. Although deacons take the lead role in addressing these needs, they seek to mobilize and organize the church community so we can all play a role in serving one another.

Diaconal Responsibilities

Diaconal responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Caring for those in financial distress (including administration of the City Church benevolence fund)
  • Caring for those who are ill (including meals and hospital administration)
  • Assisting with the service of Communion
  • Caring for the needs of those who are newly engaged or newly married
  • Caring for the homeless/underserved
  • Caring for new parents
  • Caring for widows and single parents
  • Caring for the elderly
  • Any other responsibilities as delegated to the deacons by the City Church elders
